The Empire State Building: An Enduring Symbol of New York
A History of Heights
Standing tall at 1250 feet (380 meters) and boasting 102 stories, the Empire State Building has been an iconic landmark on the New York skyline since its completion in 1931. However, its reign as the city's tallest building came to an end in April 2012 when the new One World Trade Center surpassed its height.
A Changing Skyline
At the time of its construction, the Empire State Building was the tallest structure in the world. Its Art Deco spire and 102 stories made it an easily recognizable symbol of New York City. From 1931 to 1971, it held the prestigious title of being the world's tallest building. However, the construction of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in the 1970s dethroned the Empire State Building, and it remained the second tallest building in the city until 2012.
